Day One... Nanjing Road: I've never been to Times Square at New Years (only watched on TV) but that is what came to mind when the taxi dropped us at Nanjing Road. I remember being at a crosswalk and looking at the sea of people on both sides of the street and wondering how we can we all pass. In Shanghai everyone wants to sell you something and they are persistent. We would be walking and someone would come up and say "you want watches, purses, just looky, you like" So, we're game and we follow a chinese man off the beaten path, down an alley and into a building. The first time, Morgan and I were in front as we entered a dirty old building, we stopped for a moment and looked at each other like "what are we doing". ( We would never, ever do this in the states!!! ) We looked back at the rest of the family and just moved on up those steps into a little a room turned designer store. Everything you want to buy is a negotiation -- which i stink at -- I want to go back just to have a do over!! It's hard to try and bargain these people down when you see how they live. Plus, your trying to do the currency exchange in your head to get the American equivalent. I'll do better next time......
