When we began taking French cooking lessons several Korean women showed interest in learning American recipes. Pam and I both wondered "what dishes would be considered an iconic American meal"? Three dishes immediately came to mind: Apple Pie, Hamburgers and Hot dogs. I also thought of pot roast and barbeque but the cuts of beef we use are not available here.
So, I turned to Google. An MSNBC article lists 10 Foods From Coast to Coast That Make America Great. I also enjoyed reading the information Wikipedia offers on the subject. It was interesting and explains why American cuisine is so difficult to define.
1. Clam Chowder (New England)
2. Pastrami (New York)
3. Shoofly Pie (Pennsylvania)
4. Smithfield Ham ( Virginia)
5. Po' Boys (Louisiana)
6. Fajitas (The Great State of TEXAS)
7. Hot dogs (Illinois)
8. Chili Verde (New Mexico)
9. Sourdough (San Francisco)
10. Oysters (Washington)
